While reading the novel I was intrigued by how this story would connect with the story we all love from The Little Mermaid, I was pleasantly surprised at the ending. The Sea Witch is a story of grief, loss, magic, and hidden plot points that weave the final climax in a way that no one quite see’s coming.There is also a second Prince whose inclusion makes the story even more interesting.

Evie and Annemette become fast friends unaware that a much sinister story lies waiting in the depths of this world they are living in.

In their adulthood Evie happens to meet a girl who shares an eerie resemblance with her dead friend Anna, Nik is saved from drowning by the same girl, named Annemette. However, their adventures come to a halt when one of these adventures leads to Anna being claimed by the icy hands of the sea.Īs they grow up without Anna, a web of mystery and magic tangles them in their depths till it’s far too late for them to escape it. Their Friendship is frowned upon, social status taking precedence over innocence. Nik will one day inherit the Kingdom and Evie is from a poor background, plus a witch herself, she has to keep her powers hidden unless she wishes to be burned. The book introduces us to Three childhood friends who grow up in a fishing village, Nik ( The Prince ), Anna (The deceased Aristocrat), and Evie ( Half Italian Fisherman’s daughter ). “Though magic can shape life and death, love is the one thing it cannot control” The underlying concept of the novel is very strong. Not the Princess Ariel but the story of Ursula, the iconic sea villainess we all hated as children for stealing Ariel’s voice. The Sea Witch by Sara Henning is a twisted spin on the beloved fairy tale ‘The Little Mermaid’.

We begin to question this, are villains really evil ? or are they the creation of the world around them? Are they always wrong? Or just wronged by people? A villain is born or are they created? As a reader, I have always been interested in the other side of the story. However, Fairy tales are one-sided, one perspective which always seems to be enough for us as kids but as we grow up this changes. This is the blueprint of stories we grow up with. We all have a fairy tale that we connect to – memories of staying curled up in bed as children reading these classic tales of romance – The Girl Meets Boy, Obstacles keep them away, A Sacrifice, True Love’s Kiss, A Happily Ever After.
